[This is for dicking around and getting thread samples but mostly shameless indulgence.]

It's that bad. Aren't we meant to be equals?

Are we? You're my brother, not my consort.

And I'm saying that doesn't make us equals. You're of the royal family, but you aren't emperor.

[ That hits a sore spot. ]

Then hasn't your own campaign been a joke from the start? If someone like me can't begin to match to someone like you, even after being taken in.

[He turns, strides over and tangles his fingers in the hair at the base of Jupiter's neck, pulling the younger boy against his chest.]

I'm Emperor. As that I can have no equal, even while I fight for equality. If I let that go then I won't have the authority to effect the changes that need to be made.

But just between us, in another life, perhaps you're the one I'm unequal to. And as brothers, well, I'm still older. But there's no one I trust more to be at my side and help me do what must be do, there's no one I trust more period. You're smart, Jupiter, capable, and I need you with me. If I weren't Emperor equality wouldn't even be a question.

[He curls his fingers against the back of Jupiter's neck, tone lightening a little from serious to teasing.]

As I said though, you'd still be my little brother so it's moot anyway.

[ Jupiter stays close, forehead resting against Tristan's chest, face not rising. He doesn't seem entirely convinced, not entirely satisfied. But he's quiet. ]

By making this a world where the mages don't oppress those without magic, where it doesn't take my absolute authority and power to make them stop. Where those without magic hold the same status and rights and power as those with, until the difference is meaningless.
